The Ripple Effect: committing to sustainability and ethical web design

Where values become action, and good intentions turn into meaningful impact.

At Whale Tail Digital, sustainability isn’t a buzzword.

It’s the backbone of how I work.

From the way I design and build, to the tools I choose, to the partners I collaborate with, I’m committed to creating a digital world that’s lighter, fairer, and better for people and the planet.

This page shares the principles guiding the decisions behind the scenes; the part you don’t always see, but always feel.

My values in action

These are the values that shape how I show up, design, build, and collaborate.

Sustainable by default

Every site I create is intentionally designed for performance, accessibility, and efficiency. That means faster pages, fewer emissions, and a smoother experience for your visitors, without compromising on quality or creativity.

Supporting purpose-driven organisations

I prioritise working with teams and businesses who care: eco-brands, conservation groups, wellness practitioners, tourism operators, community organisations, and values-led small businesses.

If you’re here to make a positive impact, I’m in your corner.

Accessibility & inclusion

A sustainable web is an accessible one. I use WCAG-informed practices and design with diverse users in mind. Your website should welcome everyone, not just the people who browse like you do.

Giving back

Impact should ripple outward. Throughout the year, I share free education, offer pro-bono support to local conservation and community groups, and provide discounted options for eligible not-for-profits.

Transparent & ethical by nature

I’ve signed pledges with The Ethical Move and Clean Creatives, and I only use ethical, transparent marketing practices.

I’m also working toward B Corp certification, an important next step in formalising the values I already operate by.

The Whale Tail Digital standard

Inspired by global sustainability frameworks and grounded in real-world design practice, the Whale Tail Digital standard serves as the foundation for every project.

Every site I create is:

Optimised for performance and carbon impact

Through efficient code, compressed assets, and sustainable hosting.

Accessible by default

Designed to WCAG standards so more people can use it, no matter their device or ability.

Strategic and intentional

Built to align with your goals and reduce digital bloat over time.

Maintained ethically

With transparency around plugins, updates, and responsible recommendations.

These standards evolve as the industry (and climate tech) changes – because sustainability is a practice, not a one-off project.

What this means for you

Working with Whale Tail Digital isn’t just about getting a beautiful, functional website.

It’s about building something that actively supports your mission.

Here’s how that shows up:

A faster, more efficient website

Better performance means happier visitors, improved SEO, and reduced energy use per page load.

A website aligned with your values

Your digital presence becomes part of your sustainability story – something you can proudly share with clients, partners, councils, and funding bodies.

Clear impact you can report on

Clients receive sustainability and performance insights that support grant applications, annual reports, or future B Corp submissions.

A website build that treads lighter

Lower carbon footprints, leaner code, optimised assets, and mindful design choices. Every step taken with intention.

Our ripple effect

Small changes creating big impact – for people, planet, and purpose.

My ongoing commitment (and what's next)

I’m not perfect and I’m not pretending to be. But I’m committed to doing better, year after year.

Over the next three years, I will:

  • Publish an annual Sustainability & Impact Report
  • Continue reducing my own digital and operational footprint
  • Expand the pro-bono support for community and conservation groups
  • Move steadily through the B Corp certification process
  • Grow the new Whale Tail Digital Eco-Site Certified program to help clients better communicate their impact

If the web is where business happens, let’s make sure we’re building it in a way that supports the world we want to live in.
