The Brief

What Kathleen Amy .Virtual Needed from a Website Redesign

Kathleen is a soulful virtual assistant and online business manager who supports coaches, healers, and intuitive creatives with grounded, sustainable operations. Her whole approach is about honouring her clients’ energy while building something that lasts, and she needed a website that reflected exactly that.

Before a single design decision was made, we worked through the full Deep Dive process: a detailed strategy questionnaire covering everything from brand values and design direction through to content structure, tech stack, and sustainability goals. For a project like this one, that depth matters. Kathleen had recently rebranded, had a clear sense of the elevated and intentional aesthetic she was after, and needed a web presence that could genuinely hold that vision.

The old site wasn’t doing that. It was functional, but it didn’t reflect the quality and intentionality Kathleen brings to her clients. She came to me wanting something spacious, high-end, intentional, and sustainable. All four of those things are central to how I approach every build, so this one was Aligned with a capital A from the very start.

What I did

Building a Custom, Sustainable WordPress Website for a Values-Led Service Business

This was a full Breach project – complete redesign, complete rebuild, starting from the ground up.

The design took Kathleen’s beautiful new branding and translated it into a spacious, editorial web presence that communicates depth and quality before a single word is read. Dark forest tones, elegant typography, generous breathing room: a site that feels high-end and intentional without sacrificing an ounce of performance or sustainability.

On the technical side, I built in Elementor using custom fields and templates throughout – including a structured system for Kathleen’s client stories – so her content is easy to update and manage independently. The build was carbon-conscious from the first component to the final performance test.

This project included:

  • Deep Dive strategy questionnaire and session
  • Full custom WordPress design and build (Elementor)
  • Custom fields and templates for streamlined content management
  • UX and site structure planning
  • Advanced image optimisation
  • Carbon-conscious development throughout
  • Fully responsive design across all screen sizes
  • Before and after carbon footprint measurement

The Fluke Code in Action

Sustainable Web Design for Virtual Assistants and Values-Led Service Businesses

Every Whale Tail Digital project follows the Fluke Code – five pillars that make sure sustainability, accessibility, and performance are built in from the start, not bolted on at the end. Here’s how it showed up for Kathleen Amy .Virtual.

Lightweight design

Starting from a 3.13 MB site graded F for carbon, every design decision was made with page weight in mind. The result is a visually rich, high-end aesthetic that comes in at under 450 KB on first visit. Beautiful doesn’t have to mean heavy.

Efficient build

A clean Elementor build with custom fields and templates keeps the site easy to manage and the codebase lean. No unnecessary plugins, no bloat, just a tidy technical foundation that serves both performance and sustainability.

Responsible infrastructure

Smart caching and image optimisation ensure every page loads efficiently, regardless of the high-end visual quality Kathleen’s brand demands.

Inclusive access

Accessibility built in from the start: colour contrast checked against WCAG standards, semantic heading structure, descriptive alt text throughout, and fully responsive design that works beautifully across every device.

Measurable impact

Carbon footprint benchmarked before and after using three independent tools. All three returned A grades after launch, confirming an average reduction of approximately 88%.

The key wins

  • Carbon footprint improved from F to A
  • 88% reduction in average CO₂ emissions (1.024g → 0.125g)
  • Page weight reduced from 3.13 MB to 447.81 KB – approximately 86% lighter
  • Mobile load speed improved by 45% (5.8 seconds → 3.2 seconds)
  • Estimated 11 kg CO₂ saved per year – the equivalent of approximately 43 km of driving not taken
  • A custom-designed site that proves sustainable web design and high-end aesthetics are not mutually exclusive
  • Easy for Kathleen to manage and update independently through custom fields and templates

The Sustainability Impact

From F Grade to A: The Environmental Impact of a Values-Led Website Redesign

Kathleen’s business is built on the idea that how you do something matters as much as what you do. Sustainable operations, intentional support, grounded practice. It would have been at odds with all of that for the website representing her work to be quietly generating unnecessary carbon emissions behind the scenes.

Going from an F-grade carbon footprint to an A-grade is not a small shift. For a business whose values are as central as Kathleen’s, it means the digital presence now reflects the whole picture, not just the beautiful front end, but the environmental cost of delivering it.

The 88% reduction in average CO₂ emissions brings the site from 1.024g per visit down to 0.125g, well within A-grade territory. And with all three calculators independently returning A grades, there’s no wriggle room on the result – it’s just solid.

Estimated annual savings: 11 kg of CO₂ no longer entering the atmosphere each year. That’s the equivalent of approximately 43 km of driving not taken, or the carbon work of around one tree over a full year. Happening automatically, on every visit, every day.

What they said

Kind words from clients

Working with Sez from Whale Tail Digital on my new website was such a thoughtful and supportive experience.

This was a big, layered project and Sez brought so much care and attention to helping bring it all into form.

[…] The finished website is beautiful, functional, intentional and so much more aligned with my values and the level of work I have been holding in my business.

I also deeply value Sez’s knowledge and passion for sustainable web design — my site went from a carbon footprint grade of F to an average grade of A, which I am so pleased about.

I’m so grateful for her care, skill and expertise, and would happily recommend Whale Tail Digital to anyone wanting a website built with intention, beauty, integrity and thoughtfulness.
